‘Silent Movie Mondays’ returning to Balboa Theatre

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Following a successful first season that brought classic silent films roaring back to life, San Diego Theatres recently announced the return of “Silent Movie Mondays” to be held at the iconic Balboa Theatre starting this summer.

Back by popular demand, the series’ second season will feature eight film events, each accompanied live by the venue’s historic Wonder Morton Theatre Organ. The unique experience offers moviegoers a step back in time—complete with live music from guest theatre organists flown in from across the country to accompany these cinematic treasures.

The Balboa Theatre, which opened its doors in 1924 as a vaudeville and silent film house, continues its 100-year legacy with this celebration of early cinema. This season kicks off with a special family matinee of “Peter Pan” (1924) on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m., a film sure to delight audiences of all ages.

Other highlights of the season include:

  • The Phantom of the Opera” (1925) – Sept. 29, celebrating its 100th anniversary
  • Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” (1922) – Oct. 27, just in time for Halloween
  • A holiday double feature – “Old Scrooge” (1926) and Chaplin’s “A Dog’s Life” (1918) – Dec. 15
  • Wings” (1927) – Feb. 9, a World War I epic and first Oscar winner for “Best Picture”
  • The Black Pirate” (1926) – March 30, a swashbuckling adventure in early Technicolor
  • Metropolis” (1927) – April 20, a groundbreaking dystopian sci-fi masterpiece
  • Safety Last!’ (1923) – June 8, featuring Harold Lloyd’s legendary clock tower climb

Each film will be followed by an engaging post-screening conversation with the night’s featured organist and a guest film expert, giving audiences deeper insight into the artistry and history of silent film.

Ticket prices start at $28 for reserved seating ($24 for students, seniors and military). Premium tickets—which include VIP entrance and a complimentary bag of hot buttered popcorn—are available for $38 ($33 for students, seniors and military). Series packages are also offered for those who want to catch the full season.
