Supreme Court to rule on Montgomery County schools books case

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Years of debate outside the walls of Montgomery County classrooms is slated to be settled behind the columns of the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday.

Parents of students in Montgomery County Public Schools sued the district, naming its superintendent, because they should be able to opt their children out of lessons that included books with LGBTQ characters.

In 2022, school administrators said parents could opt their students out of lessons that included five books for elementary students, but the school board reversed course a year later.

The lawsuit eventually made its way to the nation’s highest court.

While the court’s decision is unknown, the conservative majority of nine justices signaled they may side with parents citing religious rights during oral arguments in April.
