DALLAS (KDAF) — Texas drivers experienced a modest 2% auto insurance increase in 2025, adding just $44 to annual premiums — however, experts predict a $215 increase looming for 2026, which would push average annual costs past the $3,000 milestone for the first time in the Lone Star state.
Current premiums already rank Texas as 10th most expensive state nationwide, and with the state’s median income of $75,780, insurance costs could consume 4.06% of annual earnings by 2026.
With nearly 30 million residents, Texas represents one of the largest insurance markets in the country. The projected jump from $2,863 to $3,078 would place Texas among the most expensive states for auto coverage, significantly impacting household budgets.
Texas’s trajectory from moderate 2025 increases to projected steep 2026 hikes exemplifies the nationwide pattern experts are warning about — temporary rate stability followed by sharp corrections that could catch millions of drivers financially unprepared.
