TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall early Sunday morning in South Carolina, the National Hurricane Center said. It is the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season to make landfall in the U.S.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the North and South Carolina coasts, with the possibility of flash flooding. Up to six inches of rain is forecasted in some parts of North Carolina.
Chantal has strengthened some since yesterday, with sustained winds now measuring at 50 mph and traveling northward at 8 mph.
NHC said the storm will bring rough waters and rip currents to the southeastern coast of the U.S. from northeastern Florida up to the mid-Atlantic. The rest of Florida’s Atlantic coast is at a moderate risk for rip currents.
