PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The University of Oregon laid off 42 employees last week, with more expected to come, a university spokesperson told KOIN 6 News.
The layoffs come from the College of Arts and Sciences, the university’s largest school, holding approximately 1,430 full-time employees as of the Fall 2025 term.
According to university spokesperson Eric Howald, the positions affected by the layoffs included the Dean’s office administrative staff, university support staff, communications, grants, as well as 11 faculty.
Tenure-track faculty and graduate employees were not impacted, Howald said.
However, with an expected $25 to 30 million shortfall in the next fiscal year, Howald added they “anticipate that personnel reductions will be needed university-wide” over the next few months.
Further, the College of Arts and Sciences will need to “address a proportionate share of that shortfall,” which comes to around 2.5%, Howald noted.
“We are beginning the process of long-term structural changes in reshaping the university to meet future expectations and budgets,” Howald told KOIN 6 News. “As we make these decisions, we’ll continue to be guided by our strategic priorities and our principles for budget decision-making.”
