Video shows elderly in wheelchairs being detained following protest at Senate office building

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — More than 30 arrests were made after a protest was held inside the Russell Senate Office Building. Video captured showed that elderly individuals and people in wheelchairs were among those arrested.

Thirty-three of those arrested were charged with crowding, obstructing and incommoding. An additional person was arrested after crossing a police line where officers were processing the arrests, according to the United States Capitol Police.

Video obtained by DC News Now via Storyful showed officers detaining multiple people, some whom appear to be elderly and in wheelchairs. Their hands appeared to be bound by a zip-tie-like restraint.

“It should be noted that there are other places on Capitol Grounds where people can lawfully demonstrate without issue,” a statement from police said.

In the background, non-distinct chanting can be heard.
