Deputy PM praises Indian leadership on Kashmir | ABC NEWS

Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, just weeks after a tense military standoff between India and Pakistan.

The latest surge of hostilities began after armed militants killed 26 tourists in India-controlled Kashmir last month, marking the deadliest attack on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

India responded with airstrikes in Pakistan, which it argues were proportionate and in self-defence.

While Mr Marles didn’t explicitly back the strikes, he condemned terrorism and praised India’s decision to de-escalate the situation.

His visit is part of a broader Indo-Pacific tour.
