Qantas tells 5.7 million customers how much of their data is in criminal hands | The Business

Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson speaks to The Business to answer questions about its data breach.
She reveals nearly six million customers have had their data stolen, including names, email, phone numbers, addresses, tier status, and even meal preferences.
However, she says passwords, pin numbers and login details were not included in the data breach and says she’s confident the airline’s systems are secure and have handed the investigation over to the Australian Federal Police.
Ms Hudson told The Business’ Kirsten Aiken that communication with customers is her main priority and she "communicated with six million customers within 24 hours."
She also confirmed Qantas has been contacted by someone claiming to be the hacker but wouldn’t be drawn on whether the airline has received a ransom demand or threat to release the stolen information. However, she did confirm the stolen information has not been released further. Qantas has not raised the issue of compensation. Dozens of customers have contacted the ABC saying they’ve been targeted by scammers or received alerts from online accounts including MyGov, in the past week.
Ms Hudson says Qantas has also had customers reach out, and they’ve responded with phone calls or follow up information.
