(Sydney) – A suspected murder in Sydney’s south west has triggered a full police homicide investigation after a man was found dead with what authorities described as “horrific” stab wounds in what is believed to be a drug deal that went terribly wrong.
Emergency services were called to a property on Kembla Street in Croydon Park at around 5pm local time on Monday following a welfare check. Inside the home, officers discovered the lifeless body of a man, believed to be in his 50s, who had suffered multiple violent injuries. Superintendent Christine McDonald of Burwood Police Area Command described the crime as “gruesome” and the victim’s injuries as “horrific”.
A 32 year old man was arrested at the scene and taken into custody at Burwood police station, where he is currently assisting detectives with their enquiries. Police have not released his identity, and no formal charges have been laid at the time of writing.
Authorities believe the attack was linked to a drug-related dispute. Superintendent McDonald told reporters the early stages of the investigation suggest the killing may have resulted from a drug deal gone “horribly wrong”. Police also confirmed that the suspected murder weapon was found at the scene.
It remains unclear whether the two men involved were known to each other, and police have yet to determine who owned or resided at the property. No additional persons have been identified as being inside the house at the time of the incident.
“I’ve come directly from the station to be here with my officers and with the community,” McDonald said. “We know how confronting something like this can be for a quiet suburban street. We are doing everything to uncover exactly what happened here today.”
