Ukrainian unmanned aerial forces have delivered a powerful blow to two of Russia’s most important military-industrial sites, striking deep into the heart of the Kremlin’s war production network. The daring drone attacks, carried out by the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces, targeted microelectronics and chemical production plants essential to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
In the early hours of 28 May, Ukrainian drones struck the production facilities of Angstrem, a major developer and manufacturer of microelectronic components located in Zelenograd, near Moscow. The facility, part of the Elma-Zelenograd technology park, plays a key role in supplying microelectronics to Russia’s military-industrial complex. In 2024 alone, Angstrem delivered products worth 2.2 billion Russian roubles (approximately £18.8 million GBP) to eighteen critical military factories across Russia.
Ukrainian military sources confirmed the drones reached their target and caused fire damage. Footage and early reports suggest multiple explosions in the vicinity of the industrial zone, although full assessments of the damage are still under way.
Just two days earlier, on 26 May, Ukrainian forces struck the Dmitrievsky Chemical Plant in the city of Kineshma, Ivanovo region. This facility is vital to Russia’s war logistics. It manufactures organic chemicals used in the production of explosives, gunpowder, and fuel for rockets and aircraft. It also specialises in solvents for cleaning and maintaining components of military vehicles and electronic equipment.
Reports from Russian media confirm explosions took place on the premises, including a direct hit on a supply and logistics warehouse. Ukrainian drone strikes are proving to be not only disruptive but strategically targeted, aimed precisely at the backbone of the Russian war machine.
These strikes are part of what Ukraine is calling its #DeepStrike strategy – a campaign aimed at crippling Russia’s ability to wage war by attacking critical supply chains and industrial assets that support its military operations. The Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces stated simply, “We are one step ahead.”
This campaign comes as Russia’s dictator continues to escalate the war and funnel resources into military production, hoping to wear down Ukrainian resistance. However, Ukraine’s precision drone operations are turning that strategy on its head, targeting Russia’s war factories before their products ever reach the battlefield.
