Russia launched tens of thousands of missiles and drones at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this winter. To destroy Ukraine’s energy system, Moscow used 462 ballistic missiles, nearly 600 cruise missiles, and around 27,000 Shahed drones, said Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. According to the Ukrainian defense minister, the main goal of the mass attacks was to leave Ukrainians without electricity and destroy critical infrastructure. Despite this, Ukraine has managed to significantly strengthen its air defense system and stabilize the energy sector. The interception rate of cruise missiles has reached nearly 80%, while for attack drones it is up to 90%.
Fedorov thanked partners, including Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Poland, for supplying Patriot missiles, as well as the US for providing a procurement mechanism for the interceptors. He emphasized that Russian losses already exceed mobilization rates, with the average cost of advancing reaching 254 soldiers per square kilometer, and up to 428 in Donetsk Oblast. In Germany, Fedorov presented Ukraine’s approach to warfare across three domains: air, land, and the economy. Kyiv also shared data showing that on the battlefield, Ukraine is "not only holding positions but also increasing pressure," the Ukrainian defense minister said.
"Russia’s losses have reached record levels, exceeding their monthly mobilization rate. This is the result of systematic work, from implementing innovations to resource management and developing technological capabilities,” Fedorov stressed. The Ukrainian defense minister emphasized that Germany remains one of Ukraine’s key security partners.
He thanked Germany for its support in critical areas — air defense, long-range munitions, and drone capabilities.
The role of the Bundestag was also highlighted in directing resources toward solutions that deliver maximum impact on the battlefield. Ukraine is also increasing pressure on Russia’s economy, particularly through strikes on the energy sector, disrupting logistics, and raising the cost of war, Fedorov said.
He stated that Kyiv’s priorities remain unchanged: air defense, scaling up Ukrainian drone and missile production, and supplying long-range artillery ammunition. The casualty rate for Russian soldiers in Ukraine increased to a new monthly high in March, according to Ukraine’s armed forces. They say drone production enabled a record number of strikes.
Ukraine tallied Russian casualties at 35,351 last month, with drones causing 96 per cent of them while artillery and small arms fire accounted for the rest. That casualty rate was a 29 per cent increase on February, said Ukraine’s commander in chief. The losses are slightly above a previous record set in December, and appear to confirm Ukraine’s claim that Russian casualty rates are rising inexorably this year. Ukrainian Presidential Office Deputy Head Colonel Pavlo Palisa told RBC-Ukraine that Russia had suffered 316 casualties for every square kilometre it captured in the first three months of 2026, compared with 120 casualties per square kilometre last year.
