In the near future, Russian occupiers may go on the defensive in certain sections of the front in the south in order to focus their efforts on capturing the Donetsk region.
This forecast was voiced on the Freedom television channel by retired Lieutenant General Igor Romanenko, founder of the "Close the Skies of Ukraine" charity foundation. According to him, Russian propaganda has already begun preparing the population for such a scenario.
"Putin is desperate to achieve significant results by May, but these plans are falling apart. Ukrainian Defense Forces went on the defensive two months ago, conducting successful counterattacks in certain areas, particularly in the Zaporizhzhia direction, near Lyman, and in the Dnipropetrovsk region," the expert noted. At the same time, Russia lacks the resources to exert pressure on several fronts simultaneously. Therefore, the enemy command is shifting reserves to higher-priority areas.
The occupiers are currently tasked with advancing in the Pokrovsk direction and toward Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region. Romanenko noted that the enemy used the so-called "Easter truce" to transfer equipment from the Berdyansk direction to the Donetsk region.
He also noted that pro-war Russian bloggers have already begun preparing the Russian population for the occupiers to go on the defensive in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia areas. This is due to the strengthening of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ capabilities.
"For the first time in five years, they’re officially admitting the possibility of going on the defensive. The propagandists realize that active operations in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson areas will have to be curtailed, switching to trench warfare in order to concentrate all resources on the Donetsk region. At the same time, their plans clearly demonstrate a readiness to continue the war this year and even next," Igor Romanenko concluded.
Recently, Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that his troops have regained control of significant areas on the front line, including the Oleksandrivka direction. This marks a critical achievement demonstrating the growing capabilities of Ukraine’s military. Since the start of the counteroffensive operation, Ukrainian forces have liberated over 400 square kilometers of territory, with 285.6 square kilometers reclaimed in February alone. Ukrainian combat activity intensified across all fronts in February. The Armed Forces conducted 228 missile strikes and 104 airstrikes, hitting 85 targets on Russian territory. This sustained pressure is part of a broader strategy to degrade enemy logistics and morale. Syrskyi noted,
"For the first time since 2024, when we conducted the Kursk offensive operation, our troops have regained control over a larger area of Ukrainian land in a single month than the enemy has captured in the same period." The situation regarding international military aid improved in February, which is expected to bolster the capabilities of Ukrainian forces in future operations. The flow of Western weapons and ammunition is crucial for sustaining Ukraine’s defensive and offensive efforts. Syrskyi added,
"Not everything comes easily, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine are holding the line, building up capabilities, analyzing mistakes, and working to correct them."
