In 2025, special forces from the Alfa Special Operations Center of the Security Service of Ukraine carried out a veritable massacre of the Russian air defense system. Half of Russia’s Pantsir air defense systems were completely destroyed by Alpha special forces operatives, with total value of all eliminated air defenses amounting to $4 billion. They halved the number of Russian anti-aircraft missile-gun complexes Pantsir with long-range strikes. So, Special forces deliberately destroyed expensive Russian installations that were supposed to protect their skies. The Pantsir, adopted by the Russian army in 2012, is used to defend key facilities from aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones. The upgraded Pantsir-S2 model has a modernized radar capable of detecting targets over 40 kilometers away. The Pantsir systems combine surface-to-air missiles and rapid-firing cannons, capable of engaging targets at ranges up to 20 kilometers and altitudes of 15 kilometers. Recall, key elements of the Russian air defense system came under the crosshairs of Alpha’s long-range weapons. Special forces systematically disabled both long-range systems and cover systems directly on the front lines and in the rear. This work had a systemic effect: corridors were opened in the multi-layered Russian air defense system and safe passages were provided for Ukrainian long-range drones deep into the enemy’s rear – through military bases, warehouses, airfields, and other military facilities.
