Maksim Kolomiets Khitry, an officer with the 44th Separate Artillery Brigade, recounted details of the assassination of Russian Major General Roman Kutuzov in the summer of 2022. According to him, the battery in which he served carried out the attack on the occupier, using an American-British M777 artillery mount.

The soldier spoke about this in an interview with Novynarnya . Recalling the first year of full-scale war, he noted that his unit was then in "good positions" near Lysychansk.

"We were standing on a hill, with the entire city and surrounding area visible at a glance. By that time, we had converted to American-British M777 guns, or, as they are often called, ‘three axes,’" the soldier recalled. He says it’s one of the best systems he’s ever worked with. He says he’s seen many different types of weapons in action, but the "three axes" system is his favorite. "It has many advantages. It’s a relatively light and very convenient gun, it’s easy to set up, and it reorients very quickly. You don’t even need a vehicle to turn it or move it a short distance. Three or four people are enough to operate it," Khitry shared. As he noted, another advantage of the gun is that when folded, its height does not exceed much more than a meter, so it can be perfectly camouflaged in a caponier or a shallow trench. Kolomiets recalled that Russian Major General Roman Kutuzov was killed in June 2022 by the very battery in which he served, and specifically by an M777 cannon.

"That morning, no one expected anything extraordinary to happen. Everything was business as usual: the commanders contacted us and gave us the target coordinates. But they also told us, ‘Guys, we’re going to have a big target. Go ahead, shoot as accurately as you can!’" the soldier shared.

He says that it was he who was assigned the M777 artillery unit and its crew:

"When we received the target information, I was at the gun. We aimed well, fired three or four quick shots, hid, and went back into ‘standby mode.’ We were only told ‘target engaged.’ It was only that evening that I learned we were targeting General Kutuzov and had hit him dead on." Khitry said that Kutuzov had arrived at one of the headquarters and was holding an officer meeting there. And it wasn’t that close to the front line.

"It’s just that back then, the Russians knew little about the range and accuracy of the M777. For example, the rocket-assisted projectile could operate at over 30 kilometers, and the Russians felt relaxed at that distance from zero," he added. As reported in late 2022, in June of that year, Ukrainian forces killed Russian Lieutenant General Roman Kutuzov near Popasna. Journalist Serhiy Kostezh reported that although Ukrainian intelligence had previously reported this, the Russian side denied it. At the time, Kutuzov commanded the 1st Army Corps of the "DPR."

In the spring of 2023, it became known that Russians had erected a monument to Kutuzov, who participated in the city’s occupation, in Mariupol. According to the Mariupol City Council, the monument to the occupier appeared near School No. 7, which the occupation administration renamed in his honor. "Schoolchildren and teachers were herded together for the unveiling. This is yet another attempt to glorify the criminals who killed the city’s civilians," the statement read.
