The attack by a Ukrainian drone on a Russian Project 10410 ship near Kaspiysk further shattered the myth of the "invincible" Russian Navy and exposed the weaknesses of Russia’s naval air defenses. Analysts from the CyberBoroshno project write about this . Commenting on the published videos of the strikes, experts point out the operation of the ship’s AK-630M anti-aircraft artillery mount, which fired seven bursts of approximately 100 shots each.
The footage shows projectiles flying close to the drone, but judging by the subsequent video, none of them hit their target. As a result, the drone continued flying until it struck the vessel. Analysts note that the AK-630M system carries up to 2,000 rounds of ammunition. However, the system’s actual accuracy is low, and its operational logic is based not so much on precisely hitting a target as on creating a dense "wall of fire" against anti-ship missiles such as Harpoon or Exocet. "It’s significant that six such systems were installed on the cruiser Moskva. Their actual effectiveness, even against the very targets for which the system was developed, can be judged by the outcome: the cruiser Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, sank on April 14, 2022," the experts recall. For comparison, the authors of the analysis cite the performance of the AK-306 system—a more simplified version of the AK-630M with a lower rate of fire and an electric drive. Theoretically, such a system could be even more accurate due to better fire control. However, footage from the Sea Cup exercises in the Caspian Sea shows that even when firing at large stationary targets, the system exhibits low accuracy. For comparison, the American Phalanx CIWS system, which was developed around the same time as the AK-630, is also mentioned. The authors note that the American complex has been regularly modernized and adapted to new threats, including drones and highly maneuverable targets. "It can be effectively stated that the Russian surface component is weak and poorly adaptable to modern challenges. Most ships are forced to rely more on luck than on the actual effectiveness of their self-defense systems. And even if individual targets are successfully intercepted, such systems are unlikely to be able to cope with an attack by several drones simultaneously," the analysts concluded.
As previously reported the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ unmanned aerial vehicle forces destroyed the Russian Project 10410 Svetlyak border patrol ship in Kaspiysk. Details and footage were released by the SBS commander, Robert "Madyar" Brovdi. This isn’t the first time Ukrainian drones have attacked the Russian navy in Dagestan. Earlier this month, the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed a Project 22800 Karakurt small missile ship in Kaspiysk. There were also reports of the destruction of a Russian army command post near Sosnovka in the Luhansk region and a drone command post near Yasne in the Donetsk region. In addition, strikes were carried out on an enemy ammunition depot in Kalmykovka and a fuel and lubricants depot in the Smolyaninove area of the Luhansk region.
