The battle for Pokrovsk is unfolding completely differently from previous battles in this war, emphasizes analyst Timofey Milovanov. Essentially, the front line has been erased, it doesn’t exist, and the enemy may or may not be right next door, creating an atmosphere of chaos, disorganization, and the impossibility of waging a "proper" war. Russia is no longer storming the city mechanized. It’s entering in small groups, from within, erasing the front line.
Russian groups of three to five people enter the city in civilian clothes, riding bicycles, passing Ukrainian units just a few steps away. The Ukrainian soldiers greet some of them, accepting them as their own.
The city is in complete disorientation. The front line has broken up into pockets, between which saboteurs easily pass. In sunny weather, about 10 successful infiltrations are made daily. In foggy weather, up to 40.
Zelensky estimates the number of Russians in the city at 300. The military says more. They don’t live long, but they’re there long enough to cause chaos. Once they’ve established themselves, they launch drones, fire, and bring in reinforcements. In such conditions, Ukrainian units cannot fire immediately. The risks are too high: the enemy could be just meters away. Often, information is relayed to drone teams, which destroy targets with FPV strikes.
Massive losses also occur due to misidentification. One unit shot down its own ground robotic platforms. Another destroyed an infantry fighting vehicle, thinking it was Russian. It turned out that it was, but by accident. The error could have cost lives.
As the Russians advanced deeper, the drone pilots became the first to die. Ukraine withdrew some of its operators, but this weakened fire control. Most of the second-line strikes disappeared.
Pokrovsk may fall. But even that won’t give Russia a quick breakthrough. What follows is a slow battle for Konstantinovka and other neighboring towns.
“Suspilne Donbas” publication claims that Ukrainian Defense Forces moved to stronger positions near Lysivka and Sukhyi Yar to prevent encirclement, straighten the front, and hold lines amid Russian army advances.
