Russians saw a bright flash in the sky over Moscow on October 27, 2025,. Even then, speculation began that it might have been a meteorite. Some time later, specialists at the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Russian Academy of Sciences noticed that NASA had restricted access to data on the characteristics of asteroid 2025 US6, which could have been involved in the recent flash over central Russia.
Over the past century alone, Russia has repeatedly experienced the consequences of meteorite falls. Moreover, some of these cases still remain shrouded in mystery. URA.RU reports on high-profile meteorite falls in Russia in recent years.
Recall, one of the most significant events in Russian history is the Tunguska event, which occurred on June 30, 1908, near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Siberia. The explosion’s power is estimated at 10–40 megatons, making it the largest such event in modern history. The resulting blast wave flattened forests over an area of approximately 2,000 square kilometers, and seismic waves were recorded worldwide. However, the impact crater was never found, leading to the main mystery of this event: scientists believe that a celestial body, likely a rocky asteroid or comet fragment 50–60 meters in diameter, exploded in the atmosphere before reaching the Earth’s surface. Almost four decades later, on February 12, 1947, one of the largest iron meteorites fell in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in Primorsky Krai. Its original mass was estimated at 70–100 tons, and it consisted primarily of iron, nickel, and cobalt. The object disintegrated in the atmosphere and fell to Earth as a spectacular iron rain, covering an area of 35 square kilometers and leaving more than 100 craters. Thanks to expeditions by the USSR Academy of Sciences, over 27 tons of meteoritic material were collected, including the largest fragment, weighing 1,745 kg. The most significant meteorite impact of the 21st century was the Chelyabinsk meteorite fall on February 15, 2013. The meteoroid, approximately 18 meters in diameter and weighing approximately 11,000 tons, entered the atmosphere at a speed of approximately 18 km/s and disintegrated at an altitude of 23.3 km. The explosion, estimated by NASA at 440 kilotons, was the largest since the Tunguska event. The shock wave shattered windows in thousands of buildings, injuring 1,615 people and causing property damage amounting to approximately one billion rubles. The largest fragment, weighing 570 kg, was subsequently recovered from the bottom of Lake Chebarkul. Against this backdrop, a relatively recent event—the meteorite impact over Kamchatka in 2023—appears less destructive. An object less than 10 meters in diameter exploded in the atmosphere over an uninhabited area off the western coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Its atmospheric motion lasted 55 seconds, and the energy of the explosion was estimated at only 1–5 kilotons. However, it did not cause any damage or casualties.
