Ukraine currently has parity with Russia in the production of long-range drones. Alexey Getman, a retired major and veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, stated this on Radio NV , answering a question about various forecasts for the end of the war in Ukraine.
"And many have asked the question: why aren’t we attacking Russian cities? Moscow has plenty of military installations that would make sense to attack. They constantly attack our troops, but why aren’t we attacking them? Because we’re not allowed to? Attacking major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg is crucial. Besides the military objective, it also has a very significant political component. Putin’s conversations with representatives of China, India, and the United States suggest they can do whatever they want. And we can’t respond. Therefore, we have no choice but to capitulate," Getman said.
He noted that this works for Western partners. But when Ukraine launches such attacks against Moscow, the position of other countries changes.
"Even if none of them reached their target, the attack on Moscow itself is very important. And for us, first and foremost, it’s emotionally important… These aren’t missiles yet; we’re not producing them in sufficient quantities to launch them. But I’m confident that missiles will soon be launched at Moscow. Then the tone of the negotiations will change," Getman added.
Recall, Kyiv is intensifying its air campaign, aiming not only to destroy Russian oil refineries but also to expose the vulnerabilities of the country’s economic infrastructure and political leadership.
Recently, Russian air defense systems destroyed at least 44 Ukrainian drones on approach to Moscow, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.
The air barrage was the largest against the Russian capital since March, when Ukrainian strikes killed at least three people. Sobyanin said there were no reports of casualties or major damage, though emergency services were dispatched to sites hit by falling debris.
On September 9, a Ukrainian drone targeted Sochi on the Black Sea, just hours after President Vladimir Putin held meetings there.
On September 12, a Ukrainian drone struck Russia’s Leningrad region for the first time, hitting the Primorsk oil terminal near St. Petersburg and forcing a temporary suspension at the country’s largest crude port. The drone threat also shut down St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport.
Ukraine’s drone offensive is intensifying pressure on the Kremlin as strikes deepen Russia’s fuel crisis and accelerate inflation. According to September data from the independent pollster Levada Center, a record 66% of respondents in Russia now say it is time to move toward peace negotiations, while just 27% support continuing military action — the lowest level ever recorded. In June, 58% of Russians also cited rising prices as their top concern in an earlier poll also by Levada Center.
