“All my loved ones are buried here” says a Chornobyl settler | Mariya Zagorna

“Chornobyl was a quiet and peaceful place before the nuclear power plant was built,” recalls Mariya Zagorna, the town’s settler, in an interview with Klaudia Czerwińska, a TVP World correspondent. After many years, Zagorna has returned to her home.

“All my loved ones are buried here,” she says. Decades after the construction of the power plant, Chornobyl remains a place cut off from civilization, a situation made even more difficult by the ongoing war. During the winter, Zagorna knits socks for soldiers. “I have internet – I don’t need much,” she says.

The younger generation is reluctant to visit Chornobyl, partly due to formal and administrative obstacles. Yet, Zagorna adds that she still sees beauty in her small homeland.
