The Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster led to the complete depopulation of as many as 162 towns and villages. Yet years later, many former residents have returned to their homes – they are called self-settlers. Their reality is far from easy: they live in small communities of just a few dozen people, isolated from basic services such as hospitals and post offices. But 40 years after the disaster, signs of hope have emerged – in the Exclusion Zone, nature has come back to life, and populations such as Przewalski’s horses are steadily growing.
