Russia has historically used massive artillery firepower to weaken enemy forces, while infantry and armored vehicles supported and exploited these effects. However, four years of continuous warfare, coupled with Ukraine’s battlefield innovations, are diminishing Russia’s ability to effectively employ this approach. As a result, the Russian military is adopting alternative firepower, increasingly relying on drones, ground drones, and new tactics, Forbes writes . Russian forces suffered significant artillery losses during the war. Open-source reports have visually confirmed the destruction or incapacitation of over 1,700 Russian artillery systems, although the true number is likely much higher, with Ukrainian estimates exceeding 34,000. Beyond combat losses, rapid barrel wear remains a persistent problem, exacerbated by reliance on obsolete Cold War-era systems operated beyond their capabilities. Meanwhile, Ukraine began to exploit the greatest vulnerability of these systems by targeting their ammunition supply vehicles. Russia has already begun expanding its drone production capacity, particularly low-cost FPV systems that could be deployed in large numbers to compensate for artillery shortages. "Essentially, Russia is working to replicate the flexibility and scale of Ukraine’s decentralized drone ecosystem. At the same time, it is ramping up production of more established systems, such as the Lancet, to complement large-scale FPV deployment," the article notes. Recent Telegram messages from the Russian Ministry of Defense also indicate the use of heavy bomber drones in tactical operations. The transition to drone-based strikes offers several advantages over traditional artillery. Drone strikes are more precise, allowing for similar results with fewer munitions. They also allow for faster targeting cycles, with reconnaissance drones identifying targets, relay drones maintaining communications, and strike or bomber drones executing attacks in near real time, Forbes writes. Russia has recently been developing ground robots capable of serving as improvised strike systems armed with explosive devices. These platforms offer an alternative to drones, particularly in environments where electronic warfare or air defense systems limit the effectiveness of drones. Russia is also experimenting with ground robots as mobile platforms for indirect fire, including systems equipped with mortars like the 82mm Bagulnik. These ground robots can move to forward positions, potentially evading detection, and carry out fire missions remotely or semi-autonomously. After expending their ammunition, the platform can retreat for rearmament and redeployment. Together, these systems expand Russia’s capabilities for engaging Ukrainian targets beyond traditional artillery. The Russians are abandoning large, massed formations in favor of smaller, dispersed units, reducing their vulnerability to Ukrainian drones. They can penetrate contested areas, identify weak points, and conduct localized attacks without extensive preparatory fire. Instead of relying on artillery to shape the battlefield, these units achieve their effectiveness through drones, their own fire, and close combat. "Ultimately, Russia’s ability to quickly address artillery challenges and integrate drones, robotics, and evolving tactics into a holistic approach to fire support will play a key role in shaping future conflict," the article emphasizes. Recall, Ukrainian Armed Forces are targeting supply convoys carrying large quantities of artillery shells. These munitions are delivered by trucks such as the KamAZ-5350 or Ural-4320, which are only road-legal. Consequently, attacking these supply trucks is much easier for Ukraine than targeting the artillery mounts themselves.
