Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for an associate EU member status for Ukraine, which would allow Kyiv to reap some of the benefits of membership but without voting rights. With the notion of fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession and most EU leaders voicing opposition to lowering the bar for full membership, is an associate member status a solution?
“I think that if you are a country that pays, really, the ultimate price for the European idea, for freedom, for belonging to Europe, I guess it must feel inadequate to be offered just something,” Katarína Mathernová, EU Ambassador to Ukraine, told TVP World on the sidelines of the GLOBSEC Forum in Prague.
