Our main stories tonight:
– More than a hundred political prisoners were released from Belarusian prisons after talks held between U.S. special envoy John Coale and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Among them is Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski and other influential opposition figures. In return, the U.S. is lifting its sanctions on Belarusian potash.
– Another day brought another wave of attacks in Ukraine, this time on the port city of Odesa. While Russia ruthlessly pummels the country, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to meet with senior European leaders and President Zelenskyy in Berlin over the weekend.
– Thousands joined a protest march in Budapest, calling on Viktor Orbán to resign for failing to prevent systemic abuse in Hungary’s orphanages and juvenile detention centers. A video was released on December 9 showing the acting director of one of such centers beating a child. The incident sparked public outrage, with opposition leader Péter Magyar condemning the act which he described as an example of “catastrophic treatment” of children in state care.
