As April 24 marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, we focus on the fragile situation in Southern Caucasus.
News in Depth’s host Sally Jastrzębska is joined by TVP World’s Diana Skaya, who visited the region to see how peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan holds up three years after the last in the long series of conflicts between the two countries.
Can there be any hope that it will last when so many people have lost their homes and loved ones? Many Armenians would like to believe peace is possible, but they remain skeptical, saying the dominant feeling on the ground is simply “pain.”
We explain the origins of the conflict that left such deep wounds and what the current situation is like: from strifes created by Stalin’s border decisions back during the Soviet times, to how Armenia looks toward the West–EU and the U.S.–hoping to find a protector now that Russia has failed to step in and keep the Azeris at bay.
Especially now, that the U.S.-Iran conflict threatens to unravel the fragile peace that came at such great cost.
