Britain secretly deployed paratroopers to Ukraine, a move that was only made public following the death of a British soldier in an accident at a Ukrainian training ground, according to the Press Association.
On December 9, the UK Ministry of Defence announced the death of a service member who was testing a new type of weapon in Ukraine. The following day, it was revealed that the deceased was 28-year-old Lance Corporal George Hooley, who served in the British Army’s Parachute Regiment. He has served since 2015 and has deployed to Afghanistan, Africa, and Eastern Europe. According to the agency, Hooley was expected to be promoted to corporal. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to the 28-year-old paratrooper, saying he had lived a life "full of courage and determination".
"He served our country with honour and distinction around the world in the cause of freedom and democracy, including as part of the small number of British personnel in Ukraine."
The Ministry of Defence said he had been killed in a "tragic accident" while observing Ukrainian forces test "a new defensive capability, away from the front lines". Speaking in the House of Commons, Sir Keir said he had placed corporal Hooley’s name on record "to express our gratitude and respect, and to affirm that his service will never be forgotten".
corporal Hooley had an "incredibly bright" future, his commanding officer said in a tribute on Wednesday.
"I have no doubt that he would have continued to perform at the very front of his peer group over the coming years," the commanding officer said, adding that "all members of the Parachute Regiment mourn his loss". Defence Secretary John Healey shared his condolences with L/Cpl Hooley’s family and colleagues.
He said: "He served our country with distinction. His tragic death reminds us of the courage and commitment with which our outstanding armed forces serve every day."
British authorities did not name the battalion to which the deceased belonged. PA has learned that the first battalion of the Parachute Regiment is assigned to the Special Forces, while the other two are directly affiliated with the army.
The Guardian reports that there are over 100 British troops in Ukraine. The publication notes that London is keeping quiet about this fact to prevent Russia from exploiting it for "propaganda purposes."
According to The Guardian, more than 40 Britons have died in Ukraine since 2022, but Hooley’s death was the first publicly acknowledged death of a UK service member.
The publication notes that no other British soldiers were injured in the incident.
