Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov called on State Duma deputy Vladimir Shamanov to kneel. The post appeared on his Telegram channel.
Earlier, during a State Duma session, Shamanov expressed outrage at the initiative to rename Cossack villages in Chechnya. He stated that first they "threw out the Russian-speaking population," and now they’re erasing their names.
Recall, the lower house of parliament adopted in its first reading a bill to rename the Chechen towns of Sernovodskoye to Sernovodsk, Shelkovskaya to Terek, and Naurskoy to Nerva. The document was proposed by the Chechen parliament. Reacting to the deputies’ decision, Shamanov stated that these towns have their historical names.
"Not only did you kick out the Russian-speaking population, but now you’re erasing their names. This is the history of our state. What are you doing, I ask you?!" the parliamentarian said.
The head of Chechnya addressed him and stated that the general had abused the republic’s civilian population, and also claimed that he was hiding behind his parliamentary mandate and loud words.
"You must get on your knees and ask the Chechen people for forgiveness," Kadyrov wrote, accusing Shamanov of looting and destruction.
According to Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya is changing for the better every day, but "there are people who don’t like it." "They thought we’d always be in the background. They’re jealous that we’re at the forefront. Now, when the Chechen Republic is starting to change the names of Shelkovskaya and Naurskaya, the vile scoundrel Shamanov has raised his voice. He needs to be court-martialed for the crimes he committed. He was the most brutal general against the Chechen people, leading the male population into the fields and executing them," the regional leader stated.
In his speech, Kadyrov also touched on the topic of the republic’s populated areas. He recalled that the capital of Chechnya was named after the Grozny fortress, founded by Russian General Alexei Yermolov in 1818. According to him, in 2000, moving the capital to Gudermes was discussed , but Chechnya’s first president, Akhmad Kadyrov, opposed the idea. After Akhmad Kadyrov’s death, there was a proposal to rename Grozny in his honor, but this proposal was rejected by Ramzan Kadyrov himself. "I stated then that I disagreed with this proposal because I remembered the words and will of Akhmat-Khadzhi. We didn’t rewrite history then, and we’re not doing it now," he said.
From April to July 1996, General Shamanov commanded the Russian Ministry of Defense’s troop group in the republic during the First Chechen War. Under his command, Russian troops succeeded in capturing the village of Bamut.
A bill to rename three settlements was introduced in the State Duma in early June. It was noted that the three former settlements were transformed into cities by merging with other settlements.
