Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told an international summit in Sweden that it is a "critical moment" to support Ukraine, amid US peace plan negotiations.
According to Associated Press it came as European Union leaders on Monday met in Angola to discuss the situation in Ukraine on the sidelines of a summit with the African Union scheduled to take place in the country.
It followed Sunday’s talks in Geneva between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and top Ukrainian officials about the American proposal to end the war in Ukraine.
The 28-point blueprint drawn up by the U.S. to end the nearly four-year war has sparked alarm in Kyiv and European capitals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday he is "working closely with the United States, with European partners with many, many others to define steps that can end Russia’s war against us, against Ukraine, and bring real security."
"There is a lot of noise in the media, a lot of political pressure, and even greater responsibility for the decisions ahead," he added.
Top U.S. and Ukrainian officials said on Sunday they’d made progress toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war but provided scant details after discussing the American proposal that has sparked concerns among many of Washington’s European allies that the plan is too conciliatory to Moscow.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said high-stakes talks in Geneva were “very worthwhile” and constituted the most productive day in “a very long time.”
But he offered very little information on what was discussed.
He also downplayed a Thursday deadline set by President Donald Trump for Ukraine to respond to the plan, saying simply that officials want to see fighting stop as soon as possible and that officials could keep negotiating Monday and beyond.
He said that higher-level officials may eventually have to get involved.
