Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that the talks with U.S. in Switzerland to achieve peace in Ukraine were "substantive" and that U.S. President Donald Trump’s team "is hearing Ukraine’s concerns."
According to Associated Press Zelenskyy said the Ukrainian delegation will continue working until late Sunday night as top U.S. and Ukrainian officials said they were making progress toward ending the war.
Zelenskyy and officials provided scant details as they discussed the American proposal to achieve peace despite concerns among many of Washington’s European allies that the plan was far too conciliatory to Moscow.
Earlier U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the first session of the talks as “probably the most productive and meaningful meeting" since President Donald Trump returned to office in January.
Defying that optimistic tone was Trump himself, who used a lengthy online post to blast Ukraine for a lack of gratitude for U.S. military assistance, while shying away from criticizing Russia.
Rubio however said Trump was pleased.
Questions have intensified after a bipartisan group of U.S. senators said Rubio told them Saturday that the plan had originated with Russia and was actually a “wish list” for Moscow, rather than a serious push for peace.
