The protective dome over reactor 4 in Chernobyl nuclear plant has lost its core functions, the International Atomic Energy Agency has found.
The protective shield was damaged by a Russian strike back in February this year. Although the structure was repaired, an assessment carried out last week by the IAEA found that the attack had significantly degraded the shield.
The agency’s director general reported that the dome lost its primary safety functions, and that comprehensive restoration is needed to prevent further degradation and ensure nuclear safety.
