A deadly fire at a construction site in Moscow has left at least seven workers dead, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Tuesday. The blaze erupted in a high-rise building under construction on 2nd Ambulatorny Proyezd in northern Moscow. Initial reports suggest the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Authorities said seven people were killed, 12 others suffered injuries, and 31 workers were rescued from the burning structure. The fire spread across roughly 1,400 square meters and firefighters battled the flames for nearly five hours before bringing them under control. Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that more than 200 emergency personnel and 65 vehicles were deployed to contain the fire, which was fully extinguished by approximately 2 p.m. The damaged building was part of the future Alcon DC Nord technopark project being built by the Alcon Group on the grounds of the former Izolyator Plant facility. The structure was intended to serve as a data center and was expected to be completed by summer 2026. Investigators believe the fire may have originated from a short circuit in an electrical switchboard located inside temporary worker accommodations on the third floor. Survivors described how dense smoke quickly engulfed the building while extreme heat spread through the site within moments. The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a criminal investigation into possible violations of construction safety regulations that allegedly led to multiple deaths through negligence. The incident is being described as one of the most fatal fires at a Moscow construction site in recent years. Data from the Moscow construction workers’ union indicates a sharp increase in deadly workplace accidents: 23 construction workers died in Moscow in 2021, while 62 were killed and 98 seriously injured in 2025. Since the start of 2026, another 23 workers have reportedly died on construction sites. Labor unions say most of these incidents are linked to failures in workplace safety and labor protection standards.
