Defence Intelligence of Ukraine: New Modification of Shahed Drones Carries Both MANPADS and Warhead

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine has released an interactive diagram and details of a new modification of the Geran-2/Shahed drone from the ‘E’ series.

The information is available in the Weapons section under Weapon Components on the War&Sanctions portal.

This drone is equipped with a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) and a fully operational warhead.

Previously, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported that the Geran-2 drone was equipped with a Soviet-made R-60 air-to-air missile. Now, a new configuration has been revealed – with the Verba MANPADS onboard.

This modification requires real-time manual control by the operator. The drone uses a Chinese Honpho TS130C-01 optical camera and a Xingkay Tech XK-F358 mesh modem for this purpose.

When a target is detected, the operator activates two servos. The first one starts the battery and the seeker head cooling system, while the second opens the protective cover once the required temperature is reached.

The missile’s trigger is secured in the pressed position with cable ties. This ensures an automatic launch as soon as the target is locked by the seeker head.

An important difference from the version with the R-60 missile is the presence of the main warhead. The examined sample is equipped with a thermobaric TBBCH-50M warhead.

Thus, after launching the surface-to-air missile, the UAV retains its ability to carry out strike missions. The operator can also guide the drone to a ground target.

The standard set of components includes a flight controller, an inertial navigation system, a 12-channel Kometa system, a tracker based on Raspberry Pi, and 3G/4G modems.

The navigation system has for the first time recorded the use of a new Japanese 6-axis inertial module SCH1633-D0I, manufactured by Murata. It was introduced in 2024 for civilian vehicles.

The countries of origin for the rest of the electronic components are the USA, China, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
