Divisions in the U.S. over troop presence in Europe | Daniel Fried

NATO is grappling with the U.S. decision to delay the deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland. How will this affect already strained NATO–U.S. relations?

Daniel Fried, former U.S. Ambassador to Poland, said on World Talks that the move reflected a breakdown in communication at the operational level, making it no surprise that Warsaw was caught off guard.

At the same time, an internal debate is unfolding in the United States between those who favor reducing the American military presence in Europe and those who seek to maintain strong engagement within NATO.

For years, Poland and Europe have been ready to increase defense spending, but amid uncertainty over U.S. support, it has become increasingly difficult to carve a path for clear strategic direction.
