F-16 fighters cannot become a game-changer and change the course of military operations in the war that Russia has started against Ukraine, because these aircraft are not capable of countering modern Russian aviation, said aviation expert Valery Romanenko.
"These aircraft are not capable of competing on equal terms with the most modern Russian aircraft. They are lagging behind. Let’s put it this way: the F-16 is a 4+ generation aircraft, and all Russian aircraft are 4++ generation. That is, they are lagging behind in some qualitative level. They are lagging behind in radars, radar detection range," the expert said on air at " Fabrika Novostey ."
In addition, according to him, in general, Russian aircraft carry 10 missiles, but they can optionally carry two missiles with a range of more than 200 km, and the F-16 is not capable of this. Also, the F-16 can only be used at low altitudes near the front line, while the Russians, on the contrary, use their aircraft at high altitudes.
As the specialist explained, because of this, the missile range is approximately the same, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces use missiles from the F-16 practically as anti-aircraft missiles, and then the range drops by half. "That is, we are not capable of conducting battles due to tactical conditions, due to technical conditions. And the game-changer occurs when the machines are capable of changing the course of combat operations in the air," Romanenko emphasized.
He added that the course of the war is currently being affected by unmanned systems – this is a different weapon system, but both sides use it, and the Russians exceed the Ukrainian Armed Forces in terms of output. This is affected, as the analyst explained, by the fact that China makes the corresponding deliveries to the Russian Federation, while for Ukraine, on the contrary, it officially prohibits the supply of drones, components for them, and the like. Therefore, purchases have to be made through third countries.
"Brovdi, commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces, says that NATO should rethink its security, its concept. The concept that gaining an advantage in the air automatically makes a country a winner no longer works in all cases", Romanenko noted.
He cited Robert Brovdy’s story about how he was shown a NATO base that is protected by anti-aircraft systems, the latest surveillance and suppression systems, but can actually be turned into a second Pearl Harbor from a distance of 10 km using drones. If it weren’t for such technologies, the Russians would have broken through the defense of the Ukrainian Armed Forces long ago, the expert notes. He adds that now the Russians themselves are forced to stretch special nets over the roads to protect themselves from Ukrainian drones. At the same time, for example, motorcycles have become a "disposable item" for the occupiers to simply get closer to the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
