Family members of Russian Embassy staff have been evacuated from Iran, while diplomats and administrative-technical personnel remain in place, the Russian Embassy in Tehran told RIA Novosti on Saturday. "Regarding the embassy, on March 3, family members of diplomatic mission employees, including children, some support staff, as well as teachers from the embassy-run general education school were evacuated," representative of Russian Embassy said. “We are grateful to our Iranian partners who, despite the tremendous strain of the situation, did everything possible to ensure that more than one hundred Russians were able to return home quickly and safely,” the embassy said in a statement. Earlier, the embassy said 45 children were among the group that was brought to safety.
“This is a fairly large ‘Russian colony,’ as we say, that feels a deep sympathy for the Iranian people,” the embassy said.
The dozens of people were taken across the border to neighboring Azerbaijan, after which a Russian Emergency Situations Ministry plane flew the group back to Russia. The embassy did not say how many of its staff remain in Iran. Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko, cited by the state-run TASS news agency, confirmed that the “core staff remains at the embassy,” ensuring that diplomatic functions continue despite the regional tensions.
The evacuation comes as the war in the Middle East intensifies, with recent military strikes affecting multiple countries, including Iran, Israel, and surrounding Gulf states. Countries worldwide have been monitoring the situation closely, with several urging their citizens to leave conflict zones.
Russia’s move mirrors similar actions by other nations seeking to safeguard their citizens in Tehran, highlighting growing concerns over security for foreign diplomatic missions. Analysts suggest that the evacuation reflects the unpredictable nature of the conflict and the increasing risk to embassies in volatile regions, signalling potential disruptions to international diplomacy.
Officials stressed that the remaining embassy staff would maintain essential operations and continue providing consular services to Russian nationals in Iran, even as tensions remain high. Russian MFA spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that e Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is taking all necessary efforts to evacuate Russian citizens from Iran.
“Information on the possibility of leaving Iran by land via the territories of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkmenistan was promptly published and continues to be updated on the online resources of our diplomatic missions in Ashgabat, Baku, and Yerevan.
Our diplomats are in close contact with the competent authorities of the receiving countries for the purpose of the speedy evacuation of Russian citizens. I regularly communicate with our diplomats. I can say that I hear from them only the highest and most sincere words of gratitude. They describe their contacts and the effectiveness of these contacts with diplomats and representatives of the relevant authorities of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkmenistan in the most laudatory way.
We can collectively say to everyone: ‘Well, in fact we can.’ It is important that this experience of operational interaction is also applied in other situations,” added Maria Zakharova.
