Approximately 20 Russian soldiers are currently isolated and unable to conduct active operations in the city of Kupiansk. Military expert Viktor Tregubov stated that "they are essentially sitting in the basement of what remains of a hospital building." He further clarified that these troops "do not pose an immediate threat and cannot carry out any activities." It is expected that they will surrender. This localized entrapment occurs against a backdrop of continued Russian offensive attempts in the wider Kharkiv region. Recently, Russian forces launched three assaults in the direction of Novoplatonivka and Podoliv, targeting three settlements. This indicates ongoing efforts by Russian forces to intensify combat operations in the area. Conversely, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have recently made advances on the Kupiansk front, altering the tactical situation. The strategic town of Kupiansk has been a focal point in the fighting for control of eastern Ukraine. In January, Russian forces captured 245 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. Meanwhile, the Chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, has claimed the seizure of over 500 square kilometers and 17 settlements. These conflicting reports underscore the complex and fluid nature of the fighting in the region, where intense combat persists despite the presence of Russian units that are currently rendered ineffective. The strategic importance of Kupiansk was highlighted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit on December 12, 2025. A major transport hub, the city of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region first came under Russian occupation at the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, in late February 2022. In the autumn of that year, the Ukrainian Defence Forces were able to carry out a counter-offensive operation and liberate the city.
Since then, Kupiansk has remained under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and continues to play an important role in supplying Ukrainian units on the eastern bank of the Oskol River. It also poses a threat to Russian logistics in the occupied Luhansk Oblast, as the city is approximately 40 km from the Belgorod-Svatovo highway, which is used by Russian troops. At the end of 2024, the Russian army command began looking for options to regain control of Kupyiansk. Direct attacks on the city from the eastern bank of the Oskol were unsuccessful. However, the Russian military subsequently managed, with difficulty and losses, to transport several dozen infantrymen to the western bank. As of February 2025, three small bridgeheads had formed on this bank north of Kupiansk, which the Russian army began gradually expanding. Russian troops crossed the river by swimming, rafts, and boats, as well as using a gas pipeline. This is not a new method for Russia. Russian troops have already practiced secret penetration into enemy rear areas through narrow gas or sewer pipes near Avdiivka, Toretsk, and Sudzha. Having established stable footholds north of Kupiansk in the summer of 2025, Russian troops began to make their way in small groups between Ukrainian positions into the urban area of the town and gather in basements and other shelters.
Overall, the situation remains tense, with the actions of both sides on the frontline subject to change based on evolving developments. The frontline in Kharkiv Oblast demonstrates the continuation of a conflict where both sides are striving to consolidate their positions. While the trapped Russian troops are currently incapable of mounting operations, their army’s continued assault attempts signal an intent to maintain pressure on Ukrainian forces. Support and visits by Ukrainian leadership to critical regions like Kupiansk emphasize the territory’s strategic significance for Ukraine in the conditions of a protracted war.
