Ukrainian military officials told The Washington Post that two Russian soldiers surrendered to a Ukrainian ground robot in the Kharkiv region this summer . This marks the first recorded instance of a robot not only participating in combat but also forcing the enemy to surrender . The operation was carried out by the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces . According to the publication, a ground drone operated in conjunction with aerial drones and allowed Ukrainian forces to retake the fortified position without losing a single soldier.
Russian troops held the forest belt for two weeks. All attempts to clear it manually resulted in casualties, so command decided to use robots. First, a kamikaze drone struck an enemy bunker. A ground robot loaded with explosives followed . After the second strike, the drone’s camera captured the incredible: a Russian soldier emerged from the destroyed shelter and held up a piece of cardboard with the words "We want to surrender . "
A reconnaissance drone hovering over the position gave directions. A few minutes later, two armed Russians without body armor emerged from the forest belt and followed the drone down the road— the robot literally led the prisoners to Ukrainian soldiers.
The Ukrainians destroyed their ground drone to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. But the significance of this operation can no longer be overstated. For the first time in history, artificial intelligence and remotely controlled technology forced humans to surrender . "For me, the best result is not the prisoners, but the fact that not a single one of our soldiers died," said the company commander with the call sign "Nikolai." The Washington Post notes that this event shows how quickly robots are changing the face of war: first they took over the sky, now the earth. In the drone-choked battlefields of Ukraine, where medevac is difficult, the outnumbered defenders are relying increasingly on remote-controlled and robotic ground vehicles like the Zmiy to clear hazards, deliver supplies, save friendly lives, and take enemy ones. The Zmiy is essentially a box on wheels that goes 10 kilometers per hour, to a range of 20 kilometers, and is armored enough to withstand both mines and FPV drones, according to Rovertech. The wheels are designed to allow the vehicle to overcome difficult or swampy terrain.
The machine can carry up to 500 kilograms, making it suitable for delivering supplies forward, or getting the wounded to the rear. The company has other variations on the design specialized for mine-clearing operations.
The rescue on 15 October is not the first time that a Zmiy rescued a wounded serviceman. An 8 August report from the 118th Separate Mechanized Brigade showed another of a medical evacuation, albeit with fewer explosions to complicate it. Similar rescues with the use of other UGVs have taken place multiple times throughout 2025.
