German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Monday the U.S. president’s vow to shrink the U.S. military presence in Germany did not come as a surprise given Washington’s shift in focus towards the Indo-Pacific. "We don’t yet have an official confirmation of when and how this is supposed to happen on what scale,” Pistorius said of the troop pullout. But it “would not put into question NATO’s deterrence capability as such,” he added. According to Associated Press Pistorius noted that a deployment of Tomahawk missiles agreed by Biden and then-German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was meant as a “temporary bridge” while Europe develops its own capabilities, and the possibility that it might not happen as originally expected would reopen that temporary “capability gap.” “We must see how we can compensate for this,” the minister said at a military exercise event in Munster in northern Germany. Pistorius also said that a minesweeper ship left Germany’s Kiel harbor for the Mediterranean Sea on Monday. The ship may be deployed to help clear underwater mines from the Strait of Hormuz in the event of a ceasefire, he said. There are usually 80,000 to 100,000 U.S. troops in Europe, with more than 36,000 in Germany. The Pentagon announced Friday that it would remove 5,000 troops from Germany, and U.S. President Donald Trump said the next day that he would go “a lot further” than that. The U.S. military presence is a legacy of World War II, when Americans helped stabilize and rebuild Europe, and the Cold War, when the troops served as a bulwark against Soviet expansion.
More recently, the deployment has played a key role supporting operations in the Arctic, Africa and the Middle East including the current conflict with Iran.
