German Chancellor Friedrich Merz underscored Germany’s commitment to NATO and its transatlantic partnership with the United States as he visited troops at training area on Thursday. According to Associated Press his comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump again threatened that the United States could reduce its military presence in Germany, a key NATO ally and the European Union’s largest economy. At training grounds in Munster, Merz, dressed in a military uniform, addressed journalists and met with soldiers, climbing onto a tank with troops. He was also seen sitting at a table eating with troops. “What the Bundeswehr is accomplishing here in Munster is not only impressive, but it is also an important and indispensable contribution to a strong, united NATO,” Merz said. “We are carrying out this work here… side by side with the United States of America, side by side with our allies throughout NATO.” He said cooperation with U.S. forces remained close, noting that the commander of U.S. Forces in Europe and Africa had visited the site a day earlier. “We are carrying out this work shoulder to shoulder for our mutual benefit and in the spirit of deep transatlantic solidarity," he said. Trump’s threat to withdraw troops, posted on social media post on Wednesday, followed earlier comments by Merz that the U.S. was being “ humiliated ” by Tehran as it slow-walks its diplomacy over the U.S.-Israel war against Iran. Trump has mused for years about reducing America’s military presence in Germany, and has recently repeatedly railed against NATO for the its refusal to assist the U.S. in its two-month-old war. On Thursday, Merz called on Iran to negotated with the U.S. to bring an end to the war. “Iran must come to the negotiating table. It must stop stalling for time,” Merz said, adding that Germany remains in close contact with its partners, “especially in Washington,” in support of a strong NATO and a reliable transatlantic partnership.
