Former First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Russian Presidential Administration Vladislav Surkov, who long oversaw the "DPR" and "LPR" factions, called Russian dictator Vladimir Putin "insane" when he unleashed a full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022. Russian historian and Stalinist Yevgeny Spitsyn spoke about this on the YouTube channel of blogger Pavel Ivanov. According to Spitsyn, he learned about this from the former head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, who received an SMS from Surkov with the relevant content. "And then he shows me his correspondence with Surkov. Surkov writes to Rogozin: ‘Grandpa has gone crazy,’" he said. When Ivanov asked him to clarify when exactly this correspondence took place, Spitsyn stated that it was in 2022, and also noted that Surkov is far from the only member of the Russian ruling elite who holds this view, considering the decision to start a war a fatal mistake. "It’s clear who he meant by ‘grandfather’ – Putin. ‘Grandfather’ has gone mad. Do you think this understanding of what happened in 2022 is only in Surkov’s head? No. I think it’s in a significant number of officials, including those in the highest offices," he added. According to Spitsyn, the only difference between Surkov and these officials is that the former made a "false start," and therefore may already be outside of Russia, while the latter have adopted a wait-and-see approach.
Media previously reported that rumors had already circulated on Z-channel that Surkov had been forced to flee abroad because he faced arrest in Russia for embezzling funds the Kremlin allocated for the occupation of Donbas from 2014 to 2020.
Surkov, considered one of the architects of the "Russian World" concept, became one of the victims of his brainchild. According to sources, Russian intelligence agencies are investigating his involvement in the embezzlement of funds allocated by the Kremlin for the occupation of Ukraine’s Donbas region from 2014 to 2020. " Surkov hastily left the Russian Federation. Nevertheless, sources claim the former official will soon be placed on a wanted list. Overall, the "Diaries of a Spy" asserts, a wave of repression has begun in Russia against high-ranking officials who spearheaded the aggression against Ukraine and the broader idea of the "Russian world." Surkov is just one example. " Surkov’s departure coincided with another wave of purges among the ‘old’ elites and functionaries involved in the formation of the ideology of past years ," wrote Z-channel. It should be noted that there is currently no confirmation of this information. Surkov fell into disgrace and was removed from power back in 2020. After that, he retreated into the shadows and rarely appeared in public. It’s important to note that Surkov played a central role in Russia’s hybrid aggression against Ukraine, for which he is sanctioned. From 2013 to 2020, he served as Putin’s aide and officially oversaw policy toward Ukraine, including the occupation of Crimea and Donbas. He effectively controlled the so-called "LPR/DPR" that he created in the occupied territories of Ukraine. He was also the Kremlin’s key negotiator in the so-called "Minsk process."
