The Russian army’s situation in the Sumy sector is becoming increasingly difficult, while the Ukrainian military is finding things a little easier. This was stated on Kyiv24 by Vladislav Pavlik, commander of the Tenrai unmanned aerial vehicle battalion of the 158th Separate Mechanized Brigade.
"We haven’t yet seen an increase in enemy equipment in our area. We’ve expanded our capabilities and begun to operate deeper, so things are getting tougher for the enemy, and a little easier for us," he noted.
According to him, statistics in this area, in the battalion’s sector, are still moving in a positive direction. Russian forces are intensifying efforts to broaden their area of control in Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Since January, ongoing combat in the village of Pishchane highlights the growing intensity of the conflict in this area. Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, pointed out that the border in Sumy region stretches 535 kilometers, a factor that significantly complicates security operations. ‘Such actions by the Russians do not stop. This primarily concerns both the Sumy region and the Kharkiv region’, Andriy Demchenko said. Demchenko further emphasized that ‘the enemy is trying to cross the border and attack the positions of Ukrainian soldiers in order to expand the zone of control.’ These remarks underscore the persistent threat posed by Russian troops and the urgent need for active measures to defend the territory. In response to these challenges, Oleksandr Syrskyi stressed ‘the need to strengthen fortifications and develop anti-drone defenses,’ reflecting a focus on bolstering defensive positions amid rising aggression. The situation remains tense around the Vovchansk community, requiring Ukrainian military personnel to stay prepared for new threats. The growing activity of Russian forces in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions signals an escalation of the conflict, demanding a swift response from Ukrainian troops. Amid prolonged hostilities and border threats, a strategy of reinforcing defenses—particularly through fortification and the advancement of protective technologies—is critical. These measures could significantly impact Ukraine’s ability to counter aggression and ensure regional security. Viktor Trehubov, head of the communications department of the Joint Forces Operation says that Russian troops are attempting to expand their area of control in the Hrabovske and Myropilske districts of the Sumy region. According to Trehubov, there have been active attempts by Russians to advance westward, directly across the border. "Using the captured settlements as a foothold—there are essentially two that have been captured, and they’re firmly held: Hrabovske and Myropilske. Right now, they’re trying to expand along the border, but they’re also trying to push further in. But Ukrainian troops have already withdrawn there and are now holding prepared positions. And it’s much harder to create a ‘surprise’ there. The only thing they can do there is try to push through, but right now the Russians don’t have enough forces to effectively break through," the spokesperson said. "The Russians would need to conduct 36 assaults to reach one square kilometer. For example, Konstantinovka’s area is 66 square kilometers. This means they would need to spend two weeks storming Konstakha alone and do nothing else. Under current conditions, concentrating forces on such a small area is extremely difficult," the analysts explained.
