Greece Modernizes Six Patriot Air Defense Batteries to PAC-3 Standard

Greece plans to modernize six Patriot air defense batteries to the PAC-3 configuration and procure new PAC-3 MSE missiles.

According to Kathimerini, representatives of the Greek Armed Forces have already held talks with the system and ammunition manufacturers.

The estimated cost of upgrading the radars and launchers for the six units will range from $300 million to $350 million, excluding the price of the missiles themselves.

An additional incentive was the performance of the Greek contingent in Saudi Arabia, where Patriot units demonstrated 100% effectiveness in intercepting ballistic targets and drones in March and April.

Greece is currently negotiating with Saudi Arabia to cover the costs of modernizing the systems on duty in the Yanbu area.

As a reminder, the Greek parliament’s Standing Committee for Armament Programs approved the purchase of new air defense systems and the modernization of 38 F-16 Block 50 fighters to the F-16V Block 70/72 standard.

In total, €3 billion will be spent on establishing a multi-layered air defense system, and approximately €1 billion will be spent for aircraft.
