A new video message from residents of occupied Mariupol is spreading online – a plea directed straight to Vladimir Putin from Ukrainians whose homes were destroyed during Russia’s assault. Locals say they were promised “beautiful new housing,” but instead, modern apartments were built for Russian settlers, while the original Ukrainian residents were left with nothing.
What is happening in Mariupol and other Russian-occupied Ukrainian cities is not real reconstruction. It is part of the systematic removal of Ukrainians from their own land and the replacement by Russian citizens – a pattern seen across occupied territories.
