Hungary has begun withdrawing its military units from critical infrastructure sites that had been guarded after Viktor Orbán’s government declared a threat from Ukraine.
The scale-down of the military presence began two days after the country’s elections, according to HVG, citing 444.
In total, about 600 troops had been deployed to protect 75 key locations, including energy and defense facilities.
Enhanced security measures were introduced about six weeks before the elections, following Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s claim that Ukraine was preparing “operations” to destabilize Hungary’s energy system.
At the time, the government did not provide any concrete evidence or sources to support this claim.
Troops also patrolled the TurkStream gas pipeline following an alleged sabotage attempt near the border with Serbia.
However, investigations by HVG found no signs of a terrorist threat or panic on the ground, contrary to claims made by officials.
