The political games behind Poland’s and Hungary’s elections | News in Depth

In Poland, the debate over the EU’s SAFE defense financing mechanism has transformed from a technical political issue into a major political battleground ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political editor Stuart Dowell explains that both the government of Donald Tusk and the opposition Law and Justice are using the issue to mobilize their voters. According to Dowell, the opposition increasingly framed the SAFE mechanism as a sovereignty risk, while the government countered by warning that such rhetoric could lead Poland toward “Polexit.”

As Dowell notes, “Polexit… is the only issue really that can bring out all those people” who stayed home in previous elections, highlighting how emotional narratives are used to drive turnout.

The discussion also compares Poland with Hungary, where the electoral system designed by Viktor Orbán can allow his party Fidesz to win more seats even if the opposition leads in the polls. Overall, the interview concludes that modern elections in Central Europe are increasingly shaped by polarization, voter mobilization strategies, and control over political narratives rather than persuasion alone.
