Hungary Bolstered its Armed Forces with New Lynx IFVs

The new Lynx IFVs have reinforced the Hungarian 30th Armored Infantry Brigade, which is one of the country’s largest land-based military units.

The Hungarian Ministry of Defense reported that the brigade conducts regular training necessary for mastering the equipment, so the newly arrived combat vehicles have already been fully crewed.

The KF41 Lynx is being supplied to Hungary in seven variants, including an infantry fighting vehicle, command vehicle, reconnaissance vehicle, forward artillery observer vehicle, self-propelled mortar, medical evacuation vehicle, and driver training vehicle.

The Lynx IFVs are equipped with the Rheinmetall-developed Lance remotely controlled turret with a 30-mm cannon. The vehicle is designed to transport 8 soldiers, can fire programmable 30-mm ammunition, and deploy anti-tank guided missiles.

In 2020, Hungary signed a contract with Rheinmetall for the delivery of 218 KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles.

Rheinmetall delivered the first of the ordered Lynx infantry fighting vehicles to Hungary in October 2022.

The remaining 180 vehicles, in both IFV and combat support variants, are being manufactured in Hungary as part of the program’s second phase.

To this end, in August 2020, the Hungarian government and Rheinmetall signed an agreement to establish a joint venture.

A modern plant was built in Zalaegerszeg on the site of the ZALAZone industrial complex.

It includes assembly lines, a paint shop, logistics infrastructure, and an automated warehouse. Other facilities include a power plant test bench, a climate chamber, an underground firing range, and a test range.

In 2024, Rheinmetall’s Hungarian armored vehicle plant delivered the first batch of KF41 Lynx combat vehicles to the military.
