Iran launched hundreds of drone strikes against Gulf Arab states this weekend , damaging US bases and critical infrastructure and posing a serious threat to Middle East air defenses. And in these attacks, Iran is copying the tactics Russia is using in Ukraine – attacking key infrastructure in an attempt to psychologically wear down the enemy’s population while inflicting economic damage, The Wall Street Journal writes. Iranian attack drones are small, difficult to intercept, and easy to produce. While they don’t inflict the same physical damage as an arsenal of thousands of missiles, they are effective at striking civilian airports, seaports, and other key targets. Iran has also used large numbers of drones or combined drone and missile strikes to suppress the air defenses of target countries. "Their main advantage here is that mass production is relatively simple and efficient, and they can launch them from both sea and land," says former Israeli military intelligence officer Danny Cytrinovic. Iran used drones to strike targets including the US naval base in Bahrain, airports in Abu Dhabi and Kuwait, high-rise buildings in Dubai and Bahrain, and seaports. At least three people were killed in the strikes in the UAE and one in Oman. These attacks caused global transportation chaos and contributed to a sharp rise in oil prices, demonstrating Iran’s strategy of targeting the global economy’s vulnerabilities. Analysts believe Iran is attempting to internationalize the conflict by putting pressure on US allies in the Persian Gulf and inflicting economic losses on the West. According to official government statements, Iran has so far fired 541 drones at the UAE, 283 drones at Kuwait, nine drones and 136 Shahed drones at Bahrain, 12 drones at Qatar, and dozens of drones at Jordan, as well as hundreds of missiles at these countries. Israel claimed to have intercepted over 50 Iranian drones, an easier task because it is farther from Iran and drones take much longer to reach their destinations. "Iran has watched Russia use the same tactics for four years," said Samuel Bendett, an adviser in the Strategy, Policy, Plans and Programs department at the CNA think tank. Now is the time for the Persian Gulf countries to learn how to effectively defend themselves against the drone threat. Ukraine has learned to detect Russian UAVs, for example, by using cheap UAVs that can attack Russian Shahed drones once they are detected. Experts believe that the Gulf states will likely learn to defend themselves more effectively over time. To do this, they will need to share intelligence on incoming Shahids and develop multi-layered defense systems capable of countering drones, as Ukraine has done, Bendett said. "However, it is impossible to protect and defend every building in a city like Dubai, Abu Dhabi or others," he said.
