Iran’s National Police Command issued a statement announcing that protests in some areas of the country have gone beyond peaceful phases and escalated into organized and destructive riots, according to the Telegram channel Sepah Pasdaran.
“Attacks on police headquarters, police stations and departments are unacceptable.
"We will no longer show leniency. The police’s lenient stance was directed at peaceful protesters, not at troublemakers, terrorists, security violators, saboteurs, and hostile elements seeking to disrupt public order and security," the channel quoted the Iranian police command as saying.
According to Fars, rioters shouted anti-government slogans, attacked government buildings and mosques, threw stones at passersby, and set cars on fire. In Tehran, Qom, Ilam, and other regions, scattered groups armed with knives and firearms were reported attacking government facilities and provoking civilians.
Iran is facing a strong wave of protests as its economy battles severe strain, including a rapidly depreciating currency and high inflation, compounded by years of drought in Tehran, a city of around 10 million people. A report has now analysed how US President Donald Trump’s maximum pressure sanctions, imposed during his first administration, could have battered Iran’s economy over the years and helped intensify the current protest movement. The US sanctions on Iran are “some of the most punitive and comprehensive sanctions ever envisioned in the history of international relations,” Nader Hashemi, a Georgetown University professor, told Newsweek, adding, “The only way these sanctions can be lifted is if they Iran capitulates to American foreign policy demands.”
Trump’s "pretty maximalist demands" on Iran have essentially cornered the regime, brought up the cost of living and sent inflation spiking in the country, senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, Alex Vatanka, said. This has left Iranians without "hope for a diplomatic solution", further sparking protests.
Iranian officials said that security forces were investigating the fatalities, as demonstrations continued despite a visible decline in turnout in the capital, Tehran.
Reports indicate that while protests in Tehran have eased, they have intensified in other provinces, particularly in smaller cities and rural areas, where economic pressures are more acute.
Iran has struggled with soaring inflation, a weakening currency and high unemployment, problems compounded by years of international sanctions and domestic mismanagement. Economic grievances have repeatedly triggered unrest in recent years.
The current demonstrations are being described as the largest since nationwide protests erupted in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, which evolved from social demands into broader challenges to the Islamic Republic’s authority.
