Protests erupted in Iran on Monday after the country’s currency plummeted to a record low against the US dollar, prompting the resignation of the Central Bank chief Mohammad Reza Farzin. Traders and shopkeepers staged protests along Saadi Street in central Tehran and in the Shush area near the city’s main Grand Bazaar. The state-run IRNA news agency confirmed the unrest, while witnesses said similar demonstrations took place in major cities such as Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashhad. A number of videos released in social media showed antiriot forces deploying tear gas to disperse the protesters. Commenting on the protests, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged his government to listen to protesters’ “legitimate demands” and pledged to protect their livelihood. “The livelihood of the people is my daily concern. I have tasked the Minister of the Interior to hear the legitimate demands of the protesters through dialogue with their representatives, so that the government can act with all its might to resolve problems and respond responsibly,” Pezeshkian posted on X social media platform. It should be noted that Iran’s national currency rial has been depreciating against the US dollars over the recent weeks amid the US and Western sanctions and diplomatic pressure against the country. Apart from plummeting national currency, Iran has also been faced with inflation that stands at around 50 percent, as well as energy crisis.
