Iran has launched ballistic missiles at the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean, jointly used by the United States and the United Kingdom, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials. The missiles reportedly did not hit their targets. According to the source, one of the missiles failed while still in the air, while the second was intercepted by an SM-3 missile launched from a U.S. naval vessel. This marks the first reported use of a medium-range missile by Iran in this context and represents an attack on U.S. interests beyond the Middle East. The incident also suggests that Iran may possess longer-range missile capabilities than it has previously acknowledged. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, had earlier stated that the country had limited its missile range to around 2,000 kilometers, noting that Iran does not seek to extend the range further to avoid being perceived as a broader threat. The Diego Garcia airbase is one of the key airfields used by U.S. heavy bombers and serves as a major operational platform for Pentagon missions in the Middle East and beyond.
