Iran has threatened to strike oil facilities in Middle Eastern countries that are allies with the United States, in response to Israeli attacks on at least five energy sites in and around capital Tehran over the weekend. Iranian Military leaders have threatened that such an escalation could produce severe economic consequences, including the possibility that global oil prices could surge beyond $200 per barrel. The statements signalled that the conflict could soon expand beyond direct military strikes into attacks on economic targets throughout the region. Iranian commanders described the recent operations carried out by the United States and Israel as “new brutal attacks” aimed at segments of Iran’s oil, fuel, and energy systems, along with facilities that provide services to civilians. In their statement, Iranian officials appealed to governments in the Muslim world, urging them to pressure Washington and Tel Aviv to halt strikes on oil-related infrastructure. They warned that if those attacks continue, Iran may respond by launching similar strikes against energy assets elsewhere in the region. Airstrikes carried out by Israel on Saturday against oil storage sites and refining installations in Tehran marked a notable shift in the conflict. According to reports, it was the first time Israeli forces had targeted Iran’s energy infrastructure since joining the broader campaign with the United States. That campaign began on February 28, when coordinated US–Israeli strikes launched the current phase of fighting. Iranian authorities claim the attacks have resulted in more than 1,200 deaths, including the country’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and have left over 10,000 people injured. Iran has already responded with missile and drone strikes directed at Israel as well as neighboring states such as Iraq, Jordan, and several Gulf countries that host American military installations. Expanding retaliation to include oil production and export facilities would represent a major escalation. Such attacks could disrupt global energy supplies and potentially draw additional countries deeper into the conflict. Nations around the Persian Gulf—where both U.S. bases and major oil facilities are concentrated—appear particularly exposed as Iran indicates it may target economic infrastructure throughout the region if strikes on its own territory persist. The warning comes at a time when global energy markets are already experiencing volatility due to the fighting. The situation has been further complicated by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime passage through which roughly 20 million barrels of oil normally move each day. Any additional attacks on oil production sites or export terminals could deepen supply disruptions and push markets into extreme instability. By openly linking its retaliatory threats to the possibility of oil prices climbing above $200 per barrel, Iranian military leaders appear to be signaling that economic pressure may play as decisive a role as military force in determining how the conflict evolves.
